A general view of the Seine with theEiffel Tower in the background is seen in Paris, France, on July 29.

The men’s individual triathlon race at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games has been postponed to Wednesday due to poor water quality levels in the River Seine, World Triathlon has announced.

Originally scheduled for Tuesday, the World Triathlon, its medical team, the International Olympic Committee, and city officials decidedto postponethe men’s race.

“Despite the improvement on the water quality levels in the last hours, the readings at some points of the swim course are still above the acceptablelimits.”

The women triathlon is still scheduled for Wednesday and will take place prior to the men’s race, according to Olympic officials.

Training for the swimming portion of the race was canceled for a second straight day on Monday after water quality testing deemed the water unsafe for athletes.

If the water levels don’t improve by Wednesday, the original contingency date remains in place for Friday, August 2.

From CNN's Morgan Rimmer
The latest on the Paris Olympics | CNN (11)

Chuck Schumer departs a news conference on Capitol Hill, in Washington, DC, on July 23.

United States Senators from across the political spectrum told CNN today what events they are watching, and looking forward to checking out, during this summer’s Olympic Games.

“Swimming, swimming, swimming,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, though he noted that he spent one night also watching rugby.

“I sure liked that basketball game — 26 points. And women’s soccer, those two,” said Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin. “And of course Simone Biles, who testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee, and is married to a Chicago Bear.”

Republican Sen. Roger Marshall said he has been watching, “swimming and gymnastics, for right now, a little bit of basketball,” too. However, he added that he is excited to watch the decathlon.

“I ran the decathlon in college, so I look forward to the track and field part,” he told CNN.

Independent Sen. Joe Manchin and Republican Sen. Thom Tillis insisted they are watching “everything,” while Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin rattled off a list of his favorites so far.

“I like the beach volleyball. I just —we have a great team, our women are fabulous, so I’m enjoying watching that. Of course, the gymnastics is always just beautiful to watch,” he said, noting he is also watching women’s soccer.

Team USA's pommel horse hero reflects on how he helped his team secure bronze

From CNN's David Close
The latest on the Paris Olympics | CNN (12)

Stephen Nedoroscik performs on the pommel horse during the men's artistic gymnastics team finals round at Bercy Arena in Paris, France on July 29.

Stephen Nedoroscik, a pommel horse specialist on the bronze medal-winning USA men’s gymnastics team, called his clutch performance on the competition’s sixth and final rotation the “greatest moment of my life.”

Nedoroscik, who is dubbed the “Clark Kent” of the US team because he wears thick-rimmed glasses right up until the moment he performs, secured the bronze medal for the team with his routine.

“So, it was a really long day leading up to that moment. I thought about it before, abouthow I get to be the last person that goes at the Olympics. And I framed that in my head as like a positive — like ‘I can be the exclamation point,’” he said at a news conference Monday.

He said before it was his turn, he noticed that his teammates were doing well.

“I have this thing where it’s like if everyone hits before me, I’ve never missed. And I kind of, in that moment, was like, all right, let’s run it back then. Let’s go out there and do our thing,” Nedoroscik said.

Nedoroscik, dubbed the “Clark Kent” of the US team, is a pommel horse specialist, unusually qualifying for the team solely based on his ability in that one event. He’s gained his nickname for wearing thick-rimmed glasses right up until the moment he performs.

The final gymnast to compete on the pommel horse on the competition’s sixth rotation, the 25-year-old stepped up when needed, scoring 14.866 to help the US to a famous bronze medal – the team’s first in 16 years.

Nedoroscik’s efforts earned him a huge cheer from the crowd when his name was announced during the medal ceremony.

That cameo surely justified his selection in the US team.

Japan takes dramatic gold over China in men's team gymnastics final, USA takes bronze

From CNN's George Ramsay in Paris
The latest on the Paris Olympics | CNN (29)

Japan's Takaaki Sugino competes in the men's team final on Monday.

Incredible drama in the men’s team gymnastics final.

Japan has snatched gold on the final rotation having outscored China on the horizontal bar, finishing on 259.594 points overall to China’s 259.062. The US takes bronze with 257.793, the team’s first medal in this event for 16 years.

China was in pole position to claim gold heading into that final rotation but some costly mistakes dented the team’s chances, with a visibly upset Su Weide scoring just 11.600 after falling twice.

China’s final athlete, Zhang Boheng, needed to score 15.266 for his country to win gold, and he has a history of doing so after scoring more than that in qualification.

But after a solid routine, a slight step on the dismount seemed to cost Zhang and he was scored 14.733, relegating China to silver.

There’s plenty of Japanese fans inside the Bercy Arena, and they’re making a huge amount of noise with that result.

“Outrageous, Bob,” Simmons said, as Ballard laughed. “Some of the men are doing that as well.”

A spokesperson for Eurosport, which distributes the Olympic broadcast in Europe and shares the same parent company as CNN, confirmed Ballard had been dropped over his comments.

Ballard, a veteran commentator who has reported on sports since the mid-’80s, has covered several Olympic games. He also works as a music and news presenter for BBC Local Radio.

The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Canada Soccer areappealingFIFA’s six-point Olympics sanction imposed to the national women’s soccer team with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) amid the drone-spying scandal at the 2024 Paris Games.

On Saturday, football’s world governing body FIFA deducted six points from the team in group play and suspended coaches for one year.

“The appeal is based on the disproportionality of the sanction, which we believe unfairly punishes the athletes for actions they had no part in and goes far beyond restoring fairness to the match against New Zealand,” COC said in astatement.

A hearing is expected to take place Tuesday, according to Monday’s CAS press release, with a decision to be issued Wednesday.

CNN has reached out to FIFA for comment.

The COC formally apologized Wednesday after the New Zealand Olympic Committee lodged a complaint that its women’s soccer team practice was recorded by a drone in Saint-Étienne.

Canada, the defending Olympic champion, has won its first two matches of the Games – a 2-1 victory against New Zealand on Thursday and a 2-1 win over France on Sunday.

With the points deduction, Canada currently sits tied for third with New Zealand, behind Colombia and France in Group A.

Canada plays Colombia at Nice Stadium on Wednesday, still with a chance to advance to the knockout stage.

Team USA to finally receive figure skating gold medals from Beijing 2022 on August 7 in Paris

From CNN's David Close

Team USA’s figure skating team will finally receive the gold medals it earned from the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics on August 7 in a special reallocation event in Paris following the Kamila Valieva doping case fallout.

On Monday, International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams announced the delayed ceremony will occur at the Paris Games’ Champions Park, where 2024 Summer Olympics’ medal winners receive their hardware.

Initially, Valieva and the other members of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) squad were awarded first in the team figure skating event. However, the results were removed when Valieva was disqualified after being found guilty of an anti-doping rule violation.

The reallocation also means the team from Japan will be awarded silver.

It is unclear who will receive bronze. Earlier this year, Canada filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) seeking to move up to bronze position. CAS said last week it is still considering Canada’s appeal. As of now, the ROC sits in third after the reallocation.

Adams also said that another allocation ceremony will take place in Paris on August 9. Ten other athletes will be awarded medals following retroactive results decisions from three previous Summer Olympic Games.

Team GB's Tom Pidco*ck recovers from puncture to retain his mountain bike Olympic title

From CNN's Ben Morse
The latest on the Paris Olympics | CNN (50)

Thomas Pidco*ck of Team Great Britain sprints at finish line to win the gold medal during the Men's Cross-Country on day three of the Olympic Games today in Elancourt.

Team GB’s Tom Pidco*ck put in a heroic performance to recover from a puncture and still retain his mountain bike Olympic title on Monday.

Pidco*ck’s race looked to be over when he suffered a front wheel puncture on the third lap which cost him approximately 26 seconds and saw him slip down to ninth.

But the 24-year-old dug deep and clawed his way back despite falling almost 40 seconds behind the leading rider, France’s Victor Koretzky.

And in an astonishing finish, Pidco*ck passed Koretzky with just over a lap to go, with the pair going head-to-head all the way to the finish line.

Pidco*ck staved off a late charge from the Frenchman but in the end, had enough to finish 9 seconds clear to complete a remarkable race for the reigning Olympic gold medalist.

He was joined in celebration by his family, while Koretzky could be seen in tears having won silver. South Africa’s Alan Hatherly finished in third to claim bronze.

Pidco*ck – who turns 25 on Tuesday – becomes just the second man to win two Olympic mountain bike gold medals after France’s Julien Absalon.

After the race, Pidco*ck described his race as “suffering, suffering.”

“I enjoy the races where I put the work in and it’s kind of easier – Tokyo was better in that respect because I was in control.

“Here, I was not in control, I was fighting to come back. I made two mistakes, I punctured and fell off the course in the same place, so it was a battle out there.”

Here are the official race times:

  • Pidco*ck: 1:26:22
  • Koretzky: 1:26:31
  • Alan Hatherly of South Africa: 1:26:33

Telecoms operators in parts of France hit by "major sabotage," internet provider CEO says

From CNN's Chris Liakos and Joseph Ataman in Paris

Telecommunication operators in six parts of France were hit overnight, after fiber optic lines were damaged in what is described as “major sabotage,” three days after Friday’s railway infrastructure attack.

French internet provider Netalis CEO Nicolas Guillaume said in a post on X, that the “major sabotage” occurred at 2:15 a.m. local time Monday and that several operators were hit.

Images shared on X by Guillaume show at least four cables that appear to have been sliced through.

Guillaume said that the damage affected long-distance cables, adding that back-up routes were allowing traffic to be rerouted although latency was affected.

He said that it was a failure of the French state to unify small and large operators in France, which would have better protected the network infrastructure. “I am particularly angry,” Guillaume said.

French digital affairs minister Marina Ferrari said that the center for electronic defense communications is cooperating with carriers until communications and services are fully restored.

“I condemn these cowardly and irresponsible acts in the strongest possible terms,” she said.

CNN has reached out to local prosecutors for comment.

The incident comes three days after saboteurs targeted high-speed railway lines in an attack coinciding with the start of the Olympics, affecting thousands of travelers.

Team USA's Coco Gauff serves against Maria Lourdes Carle of Argentina during the women's singles match on July 29.

Coco Gauff advanced to the third round of the women’s singles tournament on Monday after a straight sets victory over María Lourdes Carlé.

The No. 2 seed raced into a 5-0 lead in the first set on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, eventually winning 6-1.

The US player broke Argentina’s Carlé in the opening game of the second set to continue to assert her control, racing away to clinch her spot in the next round 6-1.

Gauff has already shown she is formidable on Paris’ clay courts this year, having won the women’s doubles title at the French Open in June.

She will now face Croatia’s Donna Vekić in the next round after the 28-year-old beat Bianca Andreescu in straight sets earlier on Monday.

Vekić’s run to the third round continues her excellent form this season, after reaching the semifinals of Wimbledon earlier this month, her career-best performance at a grand slam.

Nadal takes 3 straight games and the mood has completely changed at Roland Garros

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher in Paris

The cheers of “Rafa!” began feeling a little half-hearted here in Paris as Novak Djokovic built a 4-0 lead in the second set, threatening to run away with this one.

But Rafael Nadal and Paris have a special relationship. And he’s riding that wave of love to a remarkable surge in momentum.

It’s now 4-3 in the second set and we are set for a crucial game. If Nadal breaks Djokovic here, then it’s all to play for. But if this wave of momentum breaks, then Djokovic is just one set away from victory.

Novak Djokovic just powered an ace past Rafael Nadal and is threatening to steam roll the Spaniard here in the second round of the Olympics.

The Serb is seeking a golden slam – something only accomplished by four other players in men’s and women’s tennis – by adding a gold medal to his career grand slam. He’s up 2-0 in the second set after winning the first.

He’s one of the all-time greats and he’s making another member of that club – Nadal – look like the oft-injured 38-year-old that he is. Djokovic, just a year younger, just feels a bit stronger at this point.

Djokovic takes the first set in his bout with Nadal

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher in Paris

Novak Djokovic is one set away from clearing a major hurdle in his quest for a first gold medal.

With a 6-1 shellacking of Rafael Nadal in the first set, Djokovic has looked overpowering for much of this match so far.

Nadal looked a little better in the last two games of the opening set, but he’ll need all of the energy from the partisan Paris crowd to help him back into this one.

The heat might also become a factor here as the early afternoon sun beats down here in Paris. It’s a picture perfect day with not a cloud above Roland Garros – but it’s also in the mid-80s in Paris as the City of Light faces its first heat wave of the summer this week.

Both players are relaxing under the shade of umbrellas in between sets here.

The crowd favorite in Paris has won the French Open an unbelievable 14 times, more than anyone else, and might as well be charging rent to other players who take Phillipe-Chartrier Court.

With every point he scores, the crowd here explodes and chants of “Ra-fa!” follow most points.

He just won his first game of the match, but is down 5-1 to his longtime rival in the first set. But with the crowd on his side, momentum could switch quickly.

World Triathlon president says she's confident that men’s event will go ahead on Tuesday

From CNN's Amanda Davies in Paris and Sam Joseph in London

Marisol Casado, president of World Triathlon, told CNN on Monday that she was confident the men’s event would go ahead as planned on Tuesday, after training was suspended for the second straight day amid concerns over the water quality in the River Seine.

Quality testing deemed the river unsafe for athletes on both Sunday and Monday after heavy rainfall on Friday and parts of Saturday.

The men’s triathlon is scheduled for Tuesday and the women’s triathlon is scheduled for Wednesday. The contingency dates for those races are Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Despite this, Casado did not rule out the possibility of the race being moved if water quality does not improve to the required level, adding that the swimming leg of the triathlon could be eliminated in the “worst scenario,” converting the competition into a duathlon with a run, cycle and another run: “I hope we’re not going to arrive to this point.”

Asked how confident she is that the event will be held as planned on Tuesday, Casado said that her confidence level is 8 out 10 and that weather conditions are improving.

He just took the third and fourth games of the match, breaking Nadal’s serve a second time to take a commanding lead in the first set – including not allowing Nadal to take a point in the third game of the set.

It’s probably a little earlier for a pressure moment than Nadal would have wanted, but he’s facing a crucial game.

Djokovic has also displayed a bit of sportsmanship: on a close shot that got by him on his left, the Serb went over to the ball mark to show it had landed in play.

Laura Collett of Team GB celebrates with horse London 52 after competing in the team eventing final on July 29 in Versailles, France.

Team GB defended its team eventing title Monday to earn the nation’s first gold medal of the Paris Olympics.

Rider Laura Collett – teamed up with Rosalind Canter and Tom McEwen – put in a near-faultless final round to secure back-to-back Olympic titles ahead of host nation France, whose riders were overjoyed with securing silver.

It’s only the second time Team GB has successfully defended the team eventing title after also doing so in 1972, according to the BBC.

Team GB now has five Olympic golds in team eventing, the most in history.

Japan took the bronze medal, its first equestrian medal since 1932.

“Unreal feeling,” Collett said of retaining gold. “It felt so special in Tokyo, but this is blowing it out of the water.”

McEwen added: “Humans. Spectators. It’s been amazing. From yesterday’s cross-country with the noise as you were going around, it’s like a world of noise following you around. Today’s shown off the best of this sport’s abilities.

“These horses have been incredible and these people in this team is even better.”

The Paris 2024 chief reiterated that everything possible has been done “to achieve the level quality to swim in the River Seine.”

Asked whether authorities are concerned about the current of the river, Thobois said that although “it’s been much higher than normally this time of the year,” there are no issues in this regard.

China's Sheng Lihao competes during the 10m air rifle men's final on July 29, in Chateauroux, France.

It’s turning out to be a brilliant start to the week for Chinese athletes at the Olympic Games.

Not long after Chinese divers Lian Junjie and Yang Hao picked up gold in the men’s synchronized diving, 19-year-old Sheng Lihao took the top podium spot in the men’s 10-meter air rifle final.

It’s the teenager’s second gold medal of these Games after he was also crowned Olympic champion in the 10-meter air rifle mixed team event alongside Huang Yuting.

Sheng is already putting together a formidable Olympic record at such a young age, adding the two golds to a silver medal he won in the 10-meter air rifle as a 16-year-old at Tokyo 2020.

To make his victory even more impressive, Sheng took the win with a new Olympic Record score of 252.2.

Sweden’s Victor Lindgren, the reigning world champion, narrowly lost out to take second place with a score of 251.4 in what was a nail-biting battle right until the end.

Croatia’s Miran Maričić took bronze, but was incredibly emotional at realizing he won a medal.

“It has taken many years to get to this level. We have been doing this for six years,” Yang told reporters, speaking about his teammate Lian.

British pair Tom Daley and Noah Williams picked up the silver medal, making Daley the first diver to win three Olympic medals in the men’s 10m synchronized platform.

Daley made his Olympic debut back in 2008, when he was just 14. His husband and two children were in the crowd to watch his latest achievement.

“It was so special to see them here. I can’t wait to go and spend the rest of the afternoon with them,” Daley told reporters after receiving his medal.

Why some key tennis stars bow out of the quest for Olympic gold

From CNN's Carly Breland

The Olympic tennis tournament is underway, but the red clay of Roland Garros is missing some of the sport’s biggest stars, including world no. 1 Jannik Sinner.

While some are sidelined by illnesses and injuries, others are abstaining as a result of the professional circuit’s brutal schedule this summer.

Between the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, summer is always a busy season for those chasing an elusive Grand Slam title. Though the rest of the sports world sees the Olympics as the ultimate competition, the Games’ anthem falls flat amidst the prestigious yearly summer tournaments in Paris, London and New York.

Ben Shelton, the rising 21-year-old US star ranked No. 14 in the world, said the Olympics fall at a tough time in the tournament schedule, as he will be coming off a stint in Europe and wants to prepare for the US Open.

US superstars were front and center yesterday at the Summer Games. Catch up here

US gymnast Simone Biles competes on the balance beam during the Olympic qualification round on July 28.

Welcome to our Monday coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Fans saw plenty of standout performances at the Summer Games yesterday, from South Korean archers to newly crowned French swimming royalty. But the US in particular brought the star-power during an exciting day of action in Paris.

If you’re just catching up, here’s what happened at the Games on Sunday:

Gymnastics:

  • Many Americans were just waking up when two things became clear: Simone Biles was feeling some pain during her long-awaited return to Olympic gymnastics — and it wasn’t going to stop her. Biles, who is considered one of the greatest gymnasts of all times, dealt with some calf pain after an awkward landing during warmups for her floor routine, but powered through it to ace each apparatus and register the top all-around score of 59.566.
  • Backed by strong performances from Americans Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles and Jade Carey, Team USA finished on top of the women’s gymnastics qualifying scores, putting them in a confident position ahead of Tuesday’s medal round. Individually, Lee and Biles will compete for gold in all-around, while Chiles qualified for the floor exercise and Carey has qualified for the final in vault.

Basketball:

  • LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Anthony Edwards led the“Re-Dream team”to an emphatic win over NBA MVP Nikola Jokić and Serbia. James, Durant and Jrue Holiday showed this US team still runs through its veterans, but the 22-year-old Edwards made his presence known — on the court, and with sideline antics — in his Olympics debut.

  • Spain’sRafael Nadalwon in his return to singles action on the familiar clay courts of Roland-Garros, and set up a tantalizing second round match withNovak Djokovic. Nadal had previously suggested he may not compete in the singles tournament at all, and the crowd roared with approval at the veteran’s presence even before the match began.

Swimming:

  • Frenchprodigy Leon Marchandset an Olympic record and crushed the field in the 400m individual medley. Marchand entered the Games widely considered the host nation’s top hope for gold in the pool, and the atmosphere was electric in La Défense Arena as the 22-year-old finished up his swim.
  • American swimmers Torri Huske and Gretchen Walsh finished in first and second place respectively in the women’s 100m butterfly final. The 21-year-old Huske finished with 55.59 to take home Team USA’s first individual gold medal of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Other key moments:

  • The US women’s soccer team brushed aside Germany in its second game of the Olympics, using a dynamic three-goal first half to cruise to a 4-1 victory. Forward Sophia Smith had two goals and the USWNT looks on track to shake off several frustrating tournaments.
  • French cycling superstar Pauline Ferrand-Prévot claimed a gold medal in the women’s cross-country mountain bike race — then announced her retirement from the discipline to focus on road racing.
  • The South Korea women’s archery team is now tied for the longest active gold medal streak in an event at the Olympic Games, after defeating China in a thrilling shoot-off.

Delegations arrive at the Trocadero in Paris, as spectators watch French singerPhilippeKaterineperforming on a giant screen during the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on July 26.

Organizers of the Paris Olympics have apologized for what some critics described as a parody of “The Last Supper” during the lavish opening ceremony on Friday.

The scene featured drag artists and dancers and was widely criticized by the Catholic church and Christian groups.

The French Catholic Church said the festivities “included scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity.”

The latest on the Paris Olympics | CNN (71)

Performers are seen on a catwalk erected along the Passerelle Debilly bridge in Paris during the opening ceremony.

While the scene has come under criticism, the opening ceremony was also widely praised, with some users pointing out that the scene was more reminiscent of other works, like “The Feast of the Gods” by Johann Rottenhammer and Jan Brueghel.

Thomas Jolly, the director of the opening ceremony, insisted that “The Last Supper” wasn’t the inspiration behind the scene in an interview with CNN affiliate BFMTV on Sunday.

“Dionysus arrives at the table because he is the Greek God of celebration and that sequence is called ‘festivity,’” Jolly said.

“The God of wine, which is also a French jewel and father of Sequana, the Goddess linked to the River Seine. The idea was to create a big pagan party in link with the God of Mount Olympus — and you will never find in me, or in my work, any desire of mocking anyone.”

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the official Olympics account said the “interpretation of the Greek God Dionysus makes us aware of the absurdity of violence between human beings.”

Organizers says triathlon will go ahead despite growing worries over water quality in Seine

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher
The latest on the Paris Olympics | CNN (72)

A view across the Seine River in Paris, on Sunday, July 28. The Olympic triathlon swimming training sessions scheduled for Sunday and Monday were canceled after water quality testing deemed the water unsafe for athletes.

The rain that drenchedFriday’s opening ceremonymay have moved out of Paris, but its effects are still beingfelt in the River Seine, with water quality concerns throwing the triathlon competition into uncertainty.

The decision to hold some swimming events in the river that splits Paris raised eyebrows when it was first announced. Swimming in the Seine has been illegal for a century but, in their desire to put the host city on full display, organizers worked up a plan to clean up the river so the world’s best athletes could use it during Paris 2024.

It was a risky move: Pollution in the Seine typically jumps after heavy rains like the ones that fell on the French capital throughout Friday and most of Saturday. Training was canceled for a second straight day on Monday after water quality testing deemed the water unsafe for athletes.

Still, organizers are confident the race will go ahead. The men’s triathlon is scheduled for Tuesday and the women’s triathlon for Wednesday. The contingency dates for those races are Thursday and Friday.

“Given the weather forecast for the next 36 hours, Paris 2024 and World Triathlon are confident thatwaterquality will return to below limits before the start of the triathlon competitions on July 30,” Paris 2024 and World Triathlon said.

The Paris area is also set for itsfirst heat wave of the summerthis week, which will hit at the same time as the triathlon.

Surfing can be a contact sport, just ask France's Johanne Defay

From CNN's Patrick Sung
The latest on the Paris Olympics | CNN (73)

Johanne Defay of Team France falls during round one of surfing on July 27, in Teahupo'o, on French Polynesia's island of Tahiti.

Picture surfing in most scenarios and usually you think of beautiful locales with people riding the waves, usually in laid-back or stress-free atmospheres.

But this isn’t any normal scenario on the water. The Olympic surfing competition — located very, very far from the River Seine and the picturesque atmosphere of Paris all the way in gorgeous Teahupo’o in Tahiti — features the top athletes on the planet competing fiercely for the one of the most coveted prizes in the sport.

And sometimes, surfing can prove to be a rough, or even dangerous, sport.

France’s Johanne Defay was surfing on day 1 of competition on Saturday when she fell off her board on her first wave, colliding with the rough coral reef and cutting her head.

The latest on the Paris Olympics | CNN (74)

Defay's injury is looked at by medical staff after a fall.

Defay required four stitches but returned, donning a helmet, and made it through the rest of the day before qualifying for the round of 16 on Day 2, taking down Australia’s Molly Picklum to lead the entire contingent of French surfers into the knockouts.

“Yesterday on my first wave I had a fall… it just went so big, I went straight into the coral with my head, I had four stitches,” Defay said after qualifying for the round of 16.

“They made me go through the concussion protocols and the results were so-so, so they made me go through them all again this morning… There’s no trauma, so we’re happy.”

Top Olympics official "deeply sorry" for introducing South Korea as North Korea during opening ceremony

The latest on the Paris Olympics | CNN (84)

Athletes from South Korea's delegation sail in a boat along the river Seine during the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in on July 26.

Olympicsorganizers have “deeply apologized” to South Korea over a “human error” that saw its 143 athletes wrongly introduced as North Korean at the opening ceremony.

The mishap occurred on Friday, when the South Korean athletes made their debut on a boat cruising down the River Seine. Both the French and English announcements falsely identified them as being from the “People’s Democratic Republic of Korea.”

That’s the full name of North Korea. The official name of South Korea is the “Republic of Korea.”

The error is politically sensitive for the two Koreas, which are still technically at war. The Korean War ended in 1953 with an armistice, andno peace treaty has ever been signed.

On Sunday, Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), spoke with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on a call, according toa statement.

“In this telephone call, the IOC President apologized sincerely for the mistake in the audio broadcast of the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games Paris 2024… in which the team of the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Korea… was wrongly identified,” it said.

“The problem was identified as a human error, for which the IOC is deeply sorry.”

The phone call followed a more immediate apology from the Olympics body, which was issued shortly after the blunder on its official Korean-language account on X.

Lifeguard deemed "Bob the Cap Catcher" steals the swimming show and brings some levity

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher
The latest on the Paris Olympics | CNN (85)

The crowd cheers for a lifeguard after he went into the pool to recover the swim cap of US swimmer Emma Weber on July 28.

They say in sports to expect the unexpected.

But really, who could have expected a lifeguard in a bright, multi-colored, very small swimsuit to jump into thepool at La Défense Arenaon Sunday in front of 15,000 people — and be hailed as a hero.

When American swimmer Emma Weberlost one of her swim caps in the pool, someone needed to fish it out. And it was up to the aforementioned hero lifeguard to plunge into the pool in front of thousands of fans to do the retrieval.

To huge cheers from the crowd, the lifeguard dove into the pool and picked up the cap at the bottom. After a quick swim to the edge of the pool, he pulled himself out — and allowed himself a wave to his new flock of adoring fans.

“This situation is common at swimming competitions,” a Paris 2024 spokesperson told CNN. “As the lifeguards are the only people wearing swimwear, apart from the athletes, a request may be made to fetch an item at the bottom of the pool prior to the next race. In this case, the request was made to the lifeguard closest to the item.”

The lifeguard declined to allow his name to be reported, the spokesperson said, in order to keep his attention on his duties for the rest of the competition.

Deemed “Bob the Cap Catcher” by NBC’s commentary crew, it was a moment of levity at one ofthe most pressure-packed venues at these Games.

SNCF employees and French gendarmes work at the scene of an attack on the high speed railway network, at Croiselles, northern France, on Friday, July 26.

France’s Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said authorities have identified several people who carried out Friday’s attacks on the country’s high-speed railway.

Darmanin said the tactics used resembled methods of the far-left, although he said much was still unclear.

An intelligence source previously told CNN that“these methods have been used by the far-left in the past.” But the source said at the time that there was “there is no evidence to tie today’s actions to them.”

From CNN’s Saskya Vandoorne and Sandi Sidhu

The triathlon training swim at the Paris Olympics has been canceled for a second day due to poor water quality levels in the River Seine, Paris 2024 and World Triathlon said in a statement.

Triathletes were set to practice in the Seine ahead of their upcoming events but the recent heavy rain in Paris has meant they will no longer get the opportunity.

“Given the weather forecast for the next 36 hours, Paris 2024 and World Triathlon are confident that water quality will return to below limits before the start of the triathlon competitions on July 30,” the statement said.

On Saturday, Data provided by Fluidion, a technology company that is testing the quality of the Seine daily, showed a huge increase in E. coli compared to the previous two days.

Five things to watch from the swimming competition at this year’s Olympics

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher

France's Leon Marchand celebrates after winning gold in the men’s 400m individual medley final on July 28, in Nanterre, France.

Katie Ledecky aims to cement her legacy The 10-time medalist started off her Olympics with a bronze medal finish in Saturday’s 400-meter freestyle. She’ll also compete in the 800-meter and the 1,500-meter races over the next several days. She’s won gold in the 800 three times and gold in the 1,500 twice – and hasn’t been defeated in those races in any of the Olympics that she’s entered.

Fallout from Chinese doping scandal Ever since the New York Times reported in April that 23 Chinese swimmers had all tested positive for the same banned substance ahead of the Tokyo Olympics and were still allowed to compete at the games in 2021, resentment and frustration has been simmering in the water. Eleven of those Chinese swimmersare due to compete again in Paris, and many of their rivals are preparing to go against them with a sense of bitter resignation.

Australian-American rivalry reignited The heat is turned up on the rivalry between two of the greatest swimming nations. The tone was set early on when Ledecky and Ariarne Titmus faced off in the 400-meter freestyle and Titmus easily beat her American rival. The Australians medaled in all four medal races on Saturday to the Americans’ three. But in the last race of the night, the American men’s 4X100 freestyle team took back the momentum by winning Team USA’s first gold of the Olympics.

Leon Marchand carries French hopes in the pool Billed as a potential successor to Michael Phelps, the Frenchprodigy set an Olympic record and crushed the field in the 400m individual medley. Marchand entered the Games as the host nation’stop hope for gold in the pool. It had been 12 years since the French won a medal in swimming.

Caeleb Dressel hopes to use fatherhood to spring him to glory Having won seven gold medals in his Olympic career, Dressel will focus on the 100-meter butterfly, the 50-meter freestyle and has already won gold as part of the 4x100-meter relay team. Dressel has won gold in every Olympic event he’s entered so far in his career.

He told reporters last week that his son, August, is now his inspiration.
