Clarion-Ledger from Jackson, Mississippi (2024)

The Clarion -Ledger I Friday, August 9, 1996 JACKSON-AREA DEATHS Daniel Harvey, former legislator By Marky Aden Clarion-Ledger Staff Writer MOUNT OLIVE Daniel Harvey, 68, a former legislator and school administrator, died of heart failure Wednesday at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Jackson. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Smith County with burial in the Harvey family plot of the church cemetery. Visitation is 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. today at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Magee.

Mr. Harvey was a Mize native and a graduate of Mize High School. He graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1951. He served in the Legislature from 1960 until 1976 and was a school administrator serving Smith and Scott counties for 16 years. He spent most of his time helping people obtain Social Security benefits or help from other state and federal programs.

He was a close friend of congressmen as well as Mississippi governors and legislators. Mr. Harvey started his teaching career at Smith School in Covington County. He later taught at Mize High School. The White Oak community was his second home and he remained there until the closing of the White Oak School.

He also taught in the Jefferson Davis County School District. After the school closed, Mr. Harvey returned to his farm in the New Haven community. Mr. Harvey was a Korean War Army veteran.

When he returned from the war, he visited his family and then spent several days going all over the community, visiting his relatives and friends. "He was the most excited person I have ever seen to return home," said Don Pittman of Mount Olive, his lifelong friend. Mr. Harvey was a member of Bunker Hill Lodge No. 311 and the Scottish Rites.

He was a Shriner. He taught Sunday school at Oak Grove Baptist Church and was the youngest deacon who had ever served there. "He just loved people," said his wife, Mary Nell Harvey. "'He loved helping people. He would work all night long if necessary, if someone needed help, trying to help someone.

He tried to do whatever he could." Mrs. Harvey said her husband was a good judge of character, able to size up all kinds of people quickly, which made him one of the best of teachers. "Daniel never did brag about his accomplishments in the Legislature," she said. "He was real quiet about a lot of things." Other survivors include: sons, Mike Harvey and Larry Harvey, both of Mount Olive; daughter, Debbie Speed of Collins; brother, Charles Harvey of Jackson; sister, Rachel Sullivan of Jackson; and four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. In addition to the meteor shower, Hill and other astronomers are excited by the appearance of the second comet this year. Hyakutake, the brighest comet in 20 years, appeared in March. Now, Comet Hale-Bopp is barely showing itself in the southern sky. Hill suggests looking for Jupiter, which appears to be a bright star, then gazing above it and to the right. Hale-Bopp looks like a faint, fuzzy star now.

It's still a half-billion miles away. It is expected to reach its peak next spring and summer. Said Lazich, "All the signs are that it's going to be as bright as Hyakutake or brighter." Testhaven Memorial Funeral Home, Inc. 3580 Robinson Road Jackson, MS 39209 MS. GENEVA BROWN Sat.
